For most of us, the demands of everyday life are fast, furious, and full-on. That was before the pandemic. Whether we are talking about technology, social media or our roles as workers, parents, caregivers, or citizens, our nervous systems are almost always “on,” preparing our bodies to respond to social, emotional, economic, and political demands.
Many of us are in chronic “fight or flight” mode.
But sustained sympathetic engagement reduces psychological safety, diminishes our potential as humans, and limits our capacity to learn in the moment. Being in constant “fight or flight” also shows up in our bodies via somatic issues like fatigue, headache, digestive issues, or depression. Add long working long hours at a keyboard to these demands, which contributes to somatic issues like headache, back pain, or fatigue. In fact, half of adults in the US have at least 1 musculoskeletal problem—including repetitive strain injury, back pain, and arthritis.
This practice-based session reviews evidence-based and emerging breath- and body-centered techniques designed to regulate reactivity (e.g., SKY breathing, HeartMath), restore balance, create connection, and rejuvenate tissues and joints.
Learning Objectives:
Practice breath- and body-based techniques in a seated position.
Employ HeartMath and other techniques during demanding work periods to boost energy and mitigate fatigue.
Apply breath- and body-centered techniques to alleviate stress and restore balance.
