From ChatGPT to ChatCPD: Can You Balance the Risks and Rewards of AI to Improve Education? (Level 2)

In the year since ChatGPT launched, there has been an explosion of “generative” AI technologies that can create text, images, audio, and other types of content based on user prompts. Generative AI is a potentially game-changing technology in CME/CPD for the development of educational content, assessment questions, learning objectives, patient cases, promotional materials, data analyses, and more. Yet charges of plagiarism, copyright infringement, and data privacy continue to plague the generative AI field. What’s worse, ChatGPT and its contemporaries make outright errors and fabricate facts. They even “hallucinate,” spinning out narratives that are nonsensical—yet still plausible and convincing to those not well-versed in the topic.

In a May 2022 Alliance webinar entitled “How ChatGPT is disrupting CPD,” 50% of attendees said in a straw poll that they had used ChatGPT recently. While anecdotal use cases were discussed, the adoption and use of generative AI across the Alliance community was not well understood.

To address that knowledge gap, a survey of the ACEHP membership was developed and deployed this past Fall to better understand the current use, perceptions, concerns, and future plans regarding AI within our member organizations. Insights from that Alliance survey, which will be discussed in this session, will help to shape our collective understanding of AI’s role in CME/CPD, and could potentially guide strategic decisions of the Alliance or other organizations going forward.

In this session, we will share Alliance member survey results that reveal trends in AI use among your peers, as well as the barriers that hinder the broader integration of AI, including lack of familiarity, and concerns regarding accuracy, privacy, and trust. Panelists will discuss the implications for future CME/CPD practice and the potential role of the Alliance and other organizations to develop educational resources and/or foster research opportunities regarding AI. In roundtable discussions, you’ll have a chance to provide real-time feedback on your experiences with ChatGPT and other AI algorithms, and brainstorm on how AI could be judiciously used to improve the education of healthcare professionals and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
