Design Considerations for Effective Microlearning (Level 2)

Session Description: Microlearning has been heralded as an innovative approach to providing engaging and efficient education which meets learners’ specific needs and fits seamlessly within their work and personal lives. As such, microlearning is an ideal educational tool for busy healthcare practitioners. In this session, we will begin by defining both what microlearning is and what it is not, emphasizing that microlearning is a multidimensional approach which can be tailored to the needs of an organization or learning cohort. Participants will discuss in small groups what aspects of microlearning have relevance for use in their own work. Then we’ll discuss key considerations for maximizing the potential and impact of the microlearning approach. The session will highlight design considerations and lessons learned from three educational initiatives that utilized microlearning including: case-based microlearning within an email-based, data-driven software platform; microlearning videos to present a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of disease; and repurposing existing content as microlearning. We will also discuss outcomes reporting and how to measure the effectiveness of microlearning. Then we’ll conclude with an interactive question and answer session in which learners can share their challenges with microlearning to troubleshoot with the group and/or receive microlearning design suggestions and considerations specific to their own work from the group and facilitators.
