Changing Practices & Closing Gaps: Engaging with Trusted Partners for Culturally Representative Team-Based Care (Level 5)

Session Description: Healthcare should be as dynamic as the patients and communities that need care. Partnerships with trusted allies, culturally representative faculty, and patients in the community can help ensure that educational programs have the greatest chance of success in improving the health of Black and Latino individuals. Join DKBmed and our trusted community partners as we discuss the value of local partnerships, and how these collaborations can help close identified healthcare gaps leading to better patient care.

Through our experience with recent programs that address medical mistrust in Black and Latino communities in New Orleans, Dallas and Los Angeles, panelists will offer tools for finding trusted local partners, working in community settings, and creating a dynamic initiative that can impact patients’ lives.

Panelists will share their experience in partnering with Black barbershops in Los Angeles to increase HIV screening, Black and Latino barbershops in Dallas to increase T2D screening and Baptist pastors in New Orleans to address the crisis of HIV in that community. Alliance learners will come to understand the value and challenges of creating these types on initiatives and community partnerships.

After attending this program, participants will understand how and why certain educational formats work to serve specific communities, partners, and topics. Learners will better understand the application of non-traditional partnerships, including outside of the health care field. Ultimately, this panel discussion will provide the intentions, research, and tools needed to collaborate with trusted partners to deliver meaningful and measurable outcomes.
