Feeding practices among Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) vary widely. While many evidence-based feeding strategies have been published, almost no NICU feeding guidelines exist. This is due in part, to rapid discoveries in both the composition of human milk and our understanding of the nutritional requirements of neonatal infants. The understanding and the application of ongoing discoveries is crucial for the entire multidisciplinary care team in every NICU.
Our objective was to highlight the latest human milk research findings during a live symposium at the Pediatric Academic Society (PAS) annual meeting and provide an enduring webcast on our website, PNCE.org. We also want to offer IPCE (Interprofessional Continuing Education) credit to the interprofessional care team.
Educational Strategy:
We realized that IPCE accreditation may not be the best choice for both activity formats. The vast majority of PAS attendees are focused on research; only 16% of attendees are in clinical practice and the majority of attendees are physicians. The multidisciplinary team in a NICU includes additional clinicians; nurses, dietitians, lactation consultants, and others. While both activity formats would reach clinicians with an interest in the content, their educational needs would be different.
We conducted a live symposium at PAS, featuring two physicians who conveyed new research findings to an audience of researchers. The symposium provided CE credits for physicians, nurses, and dietitians, but did not provide IPCE credit.
An enduring webcast was developed using the symposium content plus an additional video module. The additional module contained faculty members who represented the NICU healthcare team, These Faculty participated in video interviews in which they discussed the implications of the research and how this impacted communication among the NICU team. The enduring webcast was accredited to provide IPCE credit for the entire healthcare team.
