Ensuring continuing education activities are free from commercial influence is a cornerstone of accredited CE. Collecting information on the nature of financial relationships and determining relevance to educational content is complex and challenging, especially when the relationships involve ownership and/or employment. Moreover, notifying faculty they may not be able to participate in CME can be daunting. This case-based discussion will provide practical tips and tools for navigating relevant financial relationships involving ownership and employment. Rather than focusing on how to determine eligibility or mitigate these relationships, this session will address best practices for tracking information, documentation, and communication when faculty disclose complex financial relationships that may impact their eligibility to participate in CME. Using two real-life examples of complex relationships involving ownership or employment in accredited CME, we will discuss the following: (1) our process for seeking clarification on ownership/employment; (2) strategies for involving course directors and content experts when seeking clarification and making final decisions; (3) communicating final determinations on eligibility; (4) policy and procedure development. At the end of this talk, attendees will have tangible strategies to improve efficiency and competence when navigating and tracking complex conflicts of interests.
