Moving the Needle: Joint Accreditation and Advancing Interprofessional Continuing Education (Level 3)

Session Description: Health professionals have largely been trained in siloed manners, yet the healthcare environment necessitates teamwork and has created a major need for interprofessional continuing education. Similarly, continuing education providers have largely been formed to educate single professions, yet need advance interprofessional education to improve teamwork. Joint Accreditation is an opportunity for providers to rethink how to develop, administer and evaluate education with improving interprofessional teamwork as a central goal. Accomplishing this is complex, takes strategic collaboration and intentional effort to move toward an interprofessional framework. In this session, participants will learn about an academic center’s experience in shifting the program to interprofessional education. Learners will discuss the strategic steps taken to become a Joint Accredited provider and highlight lessons learned and practical considerations for ongoing implementation. The concept of interprofessional continuing education (IPCE) and the activity requirements will be reviewed, as well as Cleveland Clinic’s intentional efforts and strategy towards maintaining and increasing the number of activities that are designed and delivered to meet this standard.
