Don is a professional medical writer with master’s degrees in journalism and biology and 15 years of experience in CME/CPD writing. He is also a board-certified editor in the life sciences (ELS) and a certified healthcare CPD professional (CHCP). He has helped more than 30 clients win nearly $5 million in commercial support, mostly in oncology. Don is a member of the Alliance PEERS Work Group. He is also active in the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA), which is a founding member of the CEHp Partners' Council.
Don started his first full-time job in the CME/CPD field in 2009, writing NAs for Imedex, a medical education company in Atlanta, GA that focused on hematology/oncology. He attended his first Alliance meeting in 2010. Since then, Don has developed an interest in advancing the community of practice that consists of all medical writers who develop needs assessments and instructional content for accredited continuing education in the health professions. From 2014 to 2019, with the help of several co-investigators, he conducted an annual survey of medical writers on best practices for developing needs assessments. Since the pandemic, Don has focused his efforts on using the Delphi method to identify the many competencies that medical writers need to excel in developing not just NAs but also instructional content such as outcome questions, slide decks, interactive patient case studies, agendas for proposed programs, and scripts for video or audio recordings.
The competency model that Don and his research partner, Haifa Kassis, MD, are presenting in New Orleans is the first of its kind. The model was previously presented in Baltimore, Maryland in October during the 2023 AMWA Medical Writing and Communication Conference. The editorial staff of the Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions have encouraged them to submit the model for publication.
