Session Description: This session will present the design and outcomes of a pilot program titled "Optimizing Acne Care in Your Practice," which aimed to enhance the proficiency of primary care physicians within a large healthcare organization in the treatment and management of acne. Acne, being a common and time-consuming condition, often prompts patients to seek referrals to Dermatology. The program consisted of a two-session webinar series that focused on optimizing the use of over-the-counter and prescription therapies in the departments of adult and family medicine and in pediatrics.
The program design primarily addressed the specific challenges faced by primary care physicians in acne management and provided practical solutions. Notably, effective doctor-patient communication emerged as a key challenge impacting patient compliance and trust; thus, communication training was highlighted in the training. To ensure maximum engagement, motivation, and information retention, the educational program employed a case-based approach and encouraged active participation from the learners. The cases presented featured longitudinal patient stories that reflected how acne changes throughout the lifespan.
Collaborating with subject matter experts presented an opportunity to leverage their expertise. However, our research revealed that extensive didactic content related to acne etiology, clinical research studies, and treatment options did not align with the practical needs of primary care doctors. Instead, we found that case-based education and a simplified treatment framework were more valuable. By conveying technical details within realistic patient scenarios commonly encountered by primary care physicians, we effectively bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
Recognizing the importance of direct interaction, we incorporated a live webinar chat feature where two dermatologists were available to answer questions in real-time. The training content was thoughtfully presented by a combination of primary care physicians and a dermatologist, ensuring that the material resonated with the target audience.
During this session, we will guide our audience through the comprehensive process of designing, developing, and delivering this cross-departmental training program. Through our presentation, we will share invaluable insights gained and highlight the outcomes of this pilot initiative. Participants can expect to gain practical knowledge and lessons applicable to their own educational endeavors, empowering them to enhance training effectiveness and optimize acne care (or other specialty skills) within their respective healthcare settings.
