Assistant Director of Continuing Professional Development University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy
Session Description: Legal education in professional healthcare programs is limited, but exposure to it in practice is abundant. This is an area of great opportunity for continuing professional development, and a gap that continuing education could fill. This coupled with the fact that statutory and regulatory changes in health law are constantly occurring, healthcare providers are being required to have a better understanding of the law simply to effectively serve their patients.
As educators and coordinators of high-quality educational content, it is paramount to make legal education a priority offering but also ensure it is done effectively. However, teaching law related topics can be intimidating to the audience and those coordinating the education. Literature on this topic is sparse, but published articles suggest that that familiarity with law may help physicians practice medicine well. Yet, law is another language to healthcare practitioners. So, how do you bridge the gap between two completely independent fields of study (law and medicine) but whose concepts are interwoven together daily? This session will focus on practical tips to develop and/or coordinate approachable legal education for healthcare practitioners.
