Instructional Design Strategies for the Integrating Implicit Bias Content into CME Activities (Level 2)

Session Description: This session will provide a brief overview of how Northern California Kaiser Permanente regional physician education department quickly mobilized to successfully address the new California state standards (AB Bill 241), requiring that all continuing medical education courses contain curriculum that includes the understanding of implicit bias. Since learning about this recent requirement, our team has enthusiastically worked to develop resources, tools, and guidelines to help KP NorCal CME physician planners, education consultants and coordinators successfully integrate implicit bias content into their CME activities. In 2022, the Regional Physician Education Department team of Kaiser Permanente, Northern California, received the CMA/CME provider award for CLC and IB Innovation in CME Education. Our approach has included the following:

*Revising department CME activity application forms to inquire about plans for CLC and IB integration
*Region-wide distribution of KP NorCal Physician Education Department (PED) developed integration strategy tools
*IB Integration Strategies Table
*Introduction to Implicit Bias Plug and Play Presentation
*Utilization of KP librarians for literature searches
*Region-wide faculty development training

After reviewing the KP NorCal approach, this session will focus on practical strategies for integrating content that seeks to increase awareness and understanding of how implicit bias can often influence clinical decision-making and ultimately affect patient outcomes. Resources such as steps/checklists for implicit bias integration preparation, list of clear and simple instructional design strategies, and tips on mitigating challenges regarding planner/faculty apprehension to raising the concept of implicit bias. Resources will also be shared regarding reducing implicit bias in clinical bias in clinical encounters. Participants who already have a fundamental understanding of implicit bias, can expect to walk away with tools on how to effectively shed light on this topic in clinical education activities.
